Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Classes Starting October 6, 2020

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a self-defense martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting and submission holds. It focuses on the skill of controlling one's opponent, gaining a dominant position and using a number of techniques to force them in to submission via joint locks or chokeholds.

Sensei Roberto Portocarrero, originally from Managua, Nicaragua, is the newest addition to Aikido of South Florida as the Chief Instructor of our Jiu-Jitsu program. Sensei Roberto has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for over 15 years and is a certified black belt from Gracie Barra. Throughout his many years training BJJ, Roberto was afforded the opportunity to train with many of the top BJJ teachers in the world such as Marcus "Conan" Silveira, Ricardo Liborio, Marco "Parrumphina" De Matta, Dustin "Clean" Denes, and Christiano Dantas at Gracie Barra, from whom he received his black belt.

This program was specially developed to continue your child’s need for physical and mental stimulation during COVID19. We are here to aid with their on-line education; Therefore, it is necessary to provide a laptop or IPad and earphones/earbuds to complete their course curriculum.

Virtual Mindfullness Meditation

Hello Everyone,

In these trying times of self-isolation, beginning Saturday morning, March 21, I have decided to offer a virtual gathering of the ASF Sangha to allow us to continue to remain in social contact; to meditate together while maintaining physical distancing. I’ve included a link here,,to get you into the group through Zoom.

This may very well become a permanent part our collaborative meditation experience after we are once again able to safely be in each other’s physical presence. The gathering time will remain the same, every Saturday morning, 8:30AM – 9:30AM.

Beyond the high quality of instruction from Sensei Stephanie Yap, the camaraderie among students in the dojo also creates an even more powerful sense of confidence and enhances positive thinking, which all have positively benefited the unavoidable instabilities of day to day life.
